Lillian Marguerite Medland  English/Australian artist. The daughter of Lewis Medland FZS of London, a wealthy naturalist and big-game hunter. She trained as a nurse and meet the surgeon Charles Stonham at Westminster Hospital who noticed her drawings and gave her the first book commission for the first major title illustrated by the drawings. Lillian Medland also became acquainted with G E Lodge and Archibald Thornburn who instructed her in the use of Chinese white and the correct posture for birds. The birds of the British Isles, London 1906-11 had 318 monochrome plates. Other books were the Manual of the Birds of Australia London 1921-25 in 4 vols. She also illustrated articles in English and Australian Journals.. The Birds of Paradise and Bower Birds Melbourne and London 1950 with 33 colour plates. 33 species of Australian birds issued as postcards in 1925. Woburn Abbey Bedfordshire have 4 watercolour paintings. She went to live in Australia in 1923.
