Born Lincolnshire. Lived in Camberley Surrey.  Apprenticed at 14 to a wood-engraver.  Influenced by Joseph Wolf (1820-1899) and in turn influenced Rickman and Harrison.  Media used included wood engraving, etching., drawing in pencil and crayon, watercolour, oil.  Prolific illustrator of bird books including great handbooks by Lilford and Bannerman.  Travelled in Sweden, West Indies, Norway, Ceylon, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Canada and USA.  Vice-President BOU 1947.  Council member SPNR and ICBP.

The author of his obituary in The Times wrote:

A man of most exceptional charm and distinction, [Lodge] was recognized on both sides of the Atlantic as one of the finest bird-artists this country has ever produced. His wide experience in falconry doubtless gave him special knowledge of the hawk  family, for he was a keen falconer from his earliest days. In the painting of birds of prey he had no rival in any country
